Working toward progress

Seymour Helping Hands is always looking to the future. How do we help reach more members of the Baylor County Community? What started as a small Facebook page has grown into something much more and will continue to grow.

Currently we have what is considered a "Virtual Community Center" that allows people to reach out and coordinate together to meet the needs of others in the community. No need is to big or too small.

In 2022 volunteers with SHH contributed over 600 man hours to helping their local community. From mowing lawns, to fixing and donating used bicycles, to accepting-cleaning-and donating used items, Seymour has a friend in the SHH volunteers.

When asked what her favorite part of the process has been while working with SHH, President and founder Kimberly Stevenson stated:

"My favorite story would be of someone that contacted us to pick up a washing machine they wanted to donate. To my surprise it was a brand new LG front load washer with the tag still on the door. The young lady due to personal circumstances no longer wanted or needed it. A few days after SHH volunteers picked it up I received a call wanting to know if I knew anyone who worked on washing machines. It turned out a single mother of 4 was in need so we had the new one delivered to them. I was not there when it was delivered but the young man called me and said that the mom who received it had been crying because she had never had anything new like that before. it does a heart good to hear that."

In 2023 the goal is to move from a virtual Community Center into a physical location that will serve as the main hub for all SHH activities. Recently we have been in talks with a local businessman concerning a building downtown across from the courthouse. The roof had issues, but is being replaced. So SHH decided to spruce up the outside a bit while we wait on the next steps.

What will this new physical location hold?

Office space, storage, a computer lab, a meeting room, and a gathering room for those that would just like to sit and visit a bit. There is plans for a wall that will house Community Resources on which posts can be made for things such as employment, housing, and so much more. The computer lab can be utilized for classes ranging from GED to ESL (English as a second language) to ASL (American Sign Language), even college courses. Community organizations looking for a room to meet will be welcome to utilize the meeting room to help them grow.

Monthly speciality classes may include crafting, art, music, economics, budgeting, and a variety of other subjects. Those interested can also engage in game days in the meeting room with board games, bingo, card games, and even an occasional Dungeon and Dragons tournament.

While the physical location is still in the planning and start up stages the hopes, ideas, and dreams are limitless. As Walt Disney once said, "If you can dream it, you can do it!"
