What does being a volunteer mean?

Seymour Helping Hands was created by volunteers. It is staffed by volunteers. It survives thanks to volunteers. Being a volunteer with SHH means more than giving a few hours a month to a group. Being a volunteer means that you are part of something bigger and you are helping a community to grow and thrive.

Volunteer opportunities with SHH range from sorting papers, to helping research, to working on event committees, and so much more. We do fundraising at bake sales and our Car Show. We assist the community through community action projects such as the Lawn Project. Volunteers help to sort and clean items brought in for our New 2 U project so that families in need may have items they need. There is never an end to the work.

Current Projects:

  • New 2 U Donation based- receive items from the community and disperse items into the community

  • Lawnmower ProjectCommunity beautification project that mows yards for those in need: disabled, Veteran's, Single parents

  • Pumpkin Project SHH goes the week before Halloween and meets with those in the Senior Citizen area and checks to see if the people living there are wanting to participate. If they accept they receive a Pumpkin Picture for their door and if needed we also supply candy. SHH meets with kids in front of the Meals on Wheels center 45 minutes before the start of regular trick or treating. We then walk the kids through and only stop at those houses. Last year was a hit and allowed the Senior Citizens a better chance to see the kids in costume and not worry about the candy part. It also makes it a safe trick or treating experience with the kids so that they can participate and not go to doors that they may not need to or disturb the seniors not wanting to participate.

  • Curb ProjectPainting the Curbs/Mailboxes in town. This acts as a safety component so that FDP and EMS can better see

  • Project Little Things (Bags)Creating small bags of diapers/wipes etc for short term assistance with children; Create hygiene bags that can be given out to transients or in need

  • Holiday Knockout (Hunger)Holiday project that helps to feed those in need.

  • Junior V activitiesJunior Volunteers help with all projects as well as volunteer during fundraisers.

  • SISD Recognize the SISD staff of the month during the school year.

  • Secret SantaCoordinating efforts of those who would like to give back during the holidays in secret to those in the community with a need. Emphasis is placed on families with children and the elderly.
